Bindra Bags The First Ever Individual Gold For India In Olympics

Posted by Kokolicious on August 11th, 2008

The young Indians seem to be progressing at the world stage in athletics and this has been proved by 25 years old Abhinav Bindra. The Indian thirst of medals in Olympics has been quenched to some extent as Bindra clinched the first ever individual gold medal in the history of Olympics games. Also, this rare and historical medal has been won after a long wait of 28 years for India right here in Beijing since India won Hocky gold in Moscow in 1980.

Bindra qualified fourth in the 10m air rifle event and shot an overall score (596+104.5) 700.5 in the thrilling finale to bag the solo gold for India. Bindra, a Khel Ratan awardee, had earlier clinched a gold medal in 2002 Commonwealth Games in pairs event and silver in the individual event for shooting.  Abhinav has also bettered the silver medal feat of double trap shooter Rajyavardhan Sing Rathore in Athens Olympics 2004.

"He is the best shooter in the world and I think his is a morale boosting feat for everyone in the contingent," as expressed by the jubilant Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President Suresh Kalmadi after Bindra’s win.

The national coach Sunny Thomas also said happily, "We are all very happy. He is a very hardworking athlete. The entire shooting contingent is celebrating. We are very proud of him and it is just the beginning." Further he says that Abhinav is a clam and composed guy who doesn’t get very

However, Gagan Narang could not qualify for the finals of the same event when he fell short in the count-back.

The silver medal of the same event went to the local favourite and defending champion Chinese Zhu Qinan (699.7) and Finland’s Henri Hakkinen (699.4) got restricted to clinch the bronze. So, dear Abhinav Bindra, the whole nation is proud of your achievement which has certainly boosted the morale of other Indian players participating in other events in Beijing Olympics 2008.
