Top 10 Action Heroes of Bollywood

Posted by Sharda Gupta on 15th November 2008

‘Action’ is an essential ingredient of bollywood masala movies. Some actors in the industry have established themselves as action hero while some are still struggling on that side. Here is a list of top 10 Action Heroes of Bollywood

1 Amitabh Bachchan

The Angry Young Man himself, kiddos. Move over and take another line, because the deal with this superhero/renegade/porter is that the line starts from wherever Amitabh places his size-9 chappal.

2 Sunny Deol

It might be contentious to place this man ahead of his distinguished daddy, but Sunny’s been so darned prolific with juggling dacoits and battling Rajnikanthesque odds that he trumps Papaji.

3 Dharmendra

What, you thought we wouldn’t touch on the man who threatens to feast on the blood of his enemies? The only man who could be macho even in a skirt, Dharam paaji was always a shoo-in.

4 Akshay Kumar

The industry’s only martial arts stud. Kumar balances the kicks out with the guffaws nowadays, and it’s all well and good. Just don’t forget he can slap men with his feet.

5 Sanjay Dutt

Bollywood’s poster-child for bhai-roles, Dutt looks wicked good with a gun in hand and the gun looks totally at home. All’s cool when Sanju is in charge, with or without circuit.

6 Anil Kapoor

Dude, he killed Mogambo. Not to mention the assorted bunch of thugs he’d routinely tackle with, plus the umpteen times Anil played some kind of deranged bhai. All machismo, all the way.

7 Jackie Shroff

One of the single coolest moments in Hindi cinema is when Jackie Shroff is first seen in Parinda. He’s played more cops than baddies, but Jaggu dada sure knows what he’s doing.

8 Hrithik Roshan

The Krrishman had to be on the list, didn’t he? And even if Hrithik is more dancer than fighter, it must be remembered that this superhero’s also played a terrorist and a master criminal.

9 Salman Khan

Even if the shirtlessness just seems gratituous these days, Salman‘s body hasn’t always been just for show. The actor’s frequently packed quite a punch, and looked realistic while at it.

10 Ajay Devgan

He’s all actor-y now, but when he entered Bollywood he was the son of its premier stunt-director. And Veeru Devgan musta been proud of the way Ajay gruntingly tossed villains aside.

Best Dancers of Bollywood – Opinion Poll by Rediff

Posted by Sharda Gupta on 14th November 2008

We present you the result of opinion poll conducted by Rediff for Best Dancers of Bollywood. Surprisingly some names from contemporary cinema are not in the list such as Priyanka Chopra, Shahid Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor, Akshay Kumar. Apart from these Prabhudeva, Jeetender, Hema Malini who are still remembered for their dancing skills could not make it.

1. Madhuri Dixit

Madhuri came into limelight with Ek Do Teen. Not just did Madhuri Dixit have her share of superhit songs, but so iconic became her dance performances that gestures like the hurried-heartbeat of Dhak dhak or the tantalising sway of Choli Ke Peeche themselves became turning points. A trained Kathak dancer amply balancing oomph and grace, alongside Saroj Khan’s demanding moves? Madhuri’s a miracle all the way.

2. Hrithik Roshan

Currently the best dancer in Bollywood, Hrithik is simply unmatchable during song sequences. Going from fluidic body spasms to standard-issue bicepcurling profiles, Roshan does it all like nobody in the biz can. His screen-presence is only getting better as the choreography gets more intricate, and things can only go up for Duggu.

3. Mithun

‘D se hota hai Dancer,’ the speakers rang out in a fraudulent definition of DISCO, but accurate or not, a superstar was born. Mithun da could possibly patent his distinctive brand of pelvic thrust, and his legs moved like he was auditioning for a Bee Gees video.

4. Helen

The queen of the item number decades before the term even came into existence, Helen wowed us with her unbelievable figure and her immaculate movements — a performer who always made songs extremely sexy, but never looked vulgar doing it.

5. Shammi Kapoor

Apparently there was an RD Burman song in danger of being axed by the filmmakers because it seemed impossible to choreograph. Kapoor heard this and started flailing his limbs about in a bizarre akimbo manner, with his characteristic high-energy and mad expressions. The song, Aaja Aaja, became iconic. That’s how cool this guy was.

6. Jaaved Jaffery

The Hindi film industry’s first true breakdancer, Jaaved could never quite find his niche in the Bollywood musical. But cinema’s loss was the television industry’s gain, and Jaffery continues to dance — and discover dancers — on his popular talent show, Boogie Woogie.

7. Govinda

Starting out as a conventionally confident dancer — Govinda‘s feet nimbly moved to disco and breakdance styles — the actor truly gained in popularity in the 90s, when he managed to shake his portly figure to peculiarly comic and exaggerated choreography. And it’s always good to see dancers visibly enjoying themselves.

8. Sridevi

Ah, who can forget that Kaate Nahin Katte song from Mr India, where she sensuously made love to the camera? And then look, in the same film, for a completely different approach in the kooky cabaret Hawa Hawaii! Ooi ooi indeed, Sridevi was a heck of an entertainer any day of the week.

9. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan

From matching steps with Madhuri Dixit in Devdas to shaking her leg alongside Amitabh and Abhishek Bachchan in Bunty Aur Babli, Ash has always been a true performer. Putting it simply, she’s a star in every sense of the word.

10. Shah Rukh Khan

Shahrukh Khan isn’t considered a conventionally gifted dancer, but choreographers around the industry declare him to be one of the most energetic performers out there — making sure a SRK song is bound to leave an impact, more often than not.

Rahul Gandhi at St Stephen’s College, Delhi

Posted by Sharda Gupta on 12th November 2008

Less than a month after he ruffled feathers by saying that questions were not encouraged in St. Stephen’s College, Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday visited his alma mater to a warm welcome.

Gandhi was welcomed by a thunderous applause and the girls jostled with each other for photo with the good looking young Congress MP.

During the visit to the college, he spoke of the need for youth to be more active in the political process saying they being a major part of the Indian population should take the lead.

Students that attended the session, closed to outsiders, said that Gandhi insisted that there were avenues to enter politics, once "one sheds all fears and inhibitions before stepping into the political arena".

To a question by a student as to how one can enter politics without political contacts and backing, Gandhi reportedly said he had the political backing and advantage and did not know the other way.

The son of Congress President Sonia Gandhi in his speech also emphasized the need for good and higher education.

Less than a month ago, after comments from Gandhi that his questions were looked down upon, the college authorities had dismissed his remarks saying that his personal experience could not be generalised and that he hardly participated in any discussion forums during his year-long stay.

Gandhi had attended a year in the St. Stephen’s College till 1990 following which he studied at Harvard and Cambridge University.

He was given a warm welcome. He spoke well, but many expected more in his speech, said Ajitesh Kir, a first-year student of history honours in the college.

Another student found him not impressive and on the condition of anonymity said: He harped on the same note over and over – that one should not be scared. It seemed more like a moral lecture.

Bollywood’s item-girl brigade

Posted by Upasana Jain on 12th November 2008

Imagine you were a filmmaker with a film all set for release. Except, you don’t have an item number. Here, then, is a list of the industry’s best booty-shakers to pick from:

Malaika Arora Khan

The "Chhaiya Chhaiya" girl can dance on a rooftop or wind herself around a stripper pole and the results are always the same: our tongues hanging onto the floor. Things weren’t all that hot in this song, but we’re still jealous of Anil Kapoor and Nana Patekar.

Amisha Patel in Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic

There was little Amisha had to do in terms of acting for Kunal Kohli’s monstrous take on Mary Poppins, but the actress wisely let her tiny wardrobe do the talking. Even Saif Ali Khan looked justifiably distracted in this bikini’d song.

Mallika Sherawat in Aap Ka Surroor, Guru

Himesh Reshammiya’s debut film was a smash hit for no real reason, but Ms Sherawat jazzed it up with a fine take on "Mehbooba Oh Mehbooba". Meanwhile, she was the single best thing about Mani Ratnam’s Guru — even though it wasn’t really bellydancing.

Kareena Kapoor in Golmaal Returns

Mercifully not size-zero anymore, Kareena gets us all fired up for Golmaal Returns with this hot little number. There are supposed to be a couple of other women in the cast, but with Bebo this scorching, who cares?

Aishwarya Rai in Shakti, Bunty Aur Babli

Usually referred to as the industry’s ice-queen, there are rare moments Mrs Rai thaws — and gets us mopping our brows in excitement. She sizzled with Shah Rukh Khan in Shakti — her hottest moment yet — and made both Abhishek and Amitabh Bachchan drool helplessly in Kajra Re. Who would have thought it?

Yana Gupta in Dum,Aparichit,Rakht

This babe is one of the country’s most bodacious, and she wastes no time making us drool. "Babuji Dheere Chalo" is the stuff of item-girl legend, and after watching her rocking the desi Fear Factor, we really want more Yana. As much as we can get, really.

Amrita Rao in Welcome to Sajjanpur, Deewaar

Best known for playing the demure chick from Vivah, there are times the Main Hoon Na star shows off her spunk and brings out the sensuality. If all ‘good girls’ were this hot, the world would be a much happier place.

Mumait Khan in Aitraaz, Munnabhai MBBS

One of the most statuesque of youngsters, Khan scorched the screen a couple of years ago, and her steamy song sequence in Aitraaz was hot enough to get us to forget all about Priyanka Chopra. Heck, Akshay Kumar must have wished he was a part of the song too.

Diya Mirza in Cash

Mirza brought out the heat — and those excessively edible legs — in Cash, easily outdoing co-stars Shamita Shetty and Esha Deol. Plus, she’s better built than her usually modest wardrobe reveals. Yum.

Sushmita Sen in virtually any song she does.

Sen, one of the industry’s top divas, is a long tall glass of awesome, and we can’t help drinking it down. Easily fueling the fantasies of men across the universe and giving us all a taller-woman fetish, Sush is so hot she made sarees sexier than bikinis. Wow.

Shilpa Shetty in Fareb

What, you thought Bollywood’s single best body wouldn’t make it to this list? Now Fareb was a true clunker, but that "Baras Ja" video showcased Shilpa incredibly well, in sexy shirts and tops, not to mention a rather awesome pair of teensy hotpants. This babe’s got it all, and its high time we saw her in a movie again.

Most Stylish Actresses of Bollywood

Posted by Sharda Gupta on 10th November 2008

Priyanka Chopra

Don’t you just love how the gorgeous cancerian makes a chic statement in practically everything from skinny jeans to strappy dresses? It’s only fair Priyanka get to be a runway diva in Madhur Bhandarkar’s Diwali offering, Fashion.

Sonam Kapoor

We dig her hair. We dig her smile. But most of all we love her off-beat sense of fashion. Whether it’s the way Sonam sets her tresses or does complete justice to wacky outfits, Anil Kapoor’s vintage fashion-obsessed beti is a complete original.

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan

Enough has been said about her red carpet slips but when it comes to traditional Indian attire, the ever-so-regal Ash never gets it wrong.

Dia Mirza

It might take a while before you recall Dia’s last movie. Her glamour-personified appearances in the media, however, have a different story to tell. Bottom line: This former Miss India certainly knows how to mix hot trends with personal style.

Deepika Padukone

There’s a good reason why magazines love to have Deepika on their cover. She is endlessly fashionable. Remember how well she carried the 70s look in Om Shanti Om? Or her transformation into a Mediterranean Princess in Bachna Ae Haseeno? That’s Ms Padukone’s style power for you!

Katrina Kaif

Katrina Kaif‘s affinity for fashion is no secret. For films like Namastey London and Race, the successful stunner went all out, carefully hand-picking a designer wardrobe from plush stores abroad giving us ample indication of her elegant, sophisticated taste.

Kareena Kapoor

Size zero or not, Bebo is Bollywood’s definitive clothes horse. A dedicated student of high-end fashion with a classy persona to match, Kareena is round-the-clock hip and happening. And so, irrespective, of whether she is spending exclusive time with the jawans for some news channel or holidaying abroad, she looks fresh off- the-boutique.

Shilpa Shetty

Some are born fashionistas. Some learn the hard way. Shilpa Shetty belongs to the latter category. After a decade full of loud make-up and gaudy clothing, the lissome lass has finally mastered the A to Z of international fashion.

Preity Zinta

There’s more to Preity Zinta than her pixie smile and legendary effervescence. And we aren’t talking about her new-found love for parallel cinema. This high-priestess of haute couture never fails to make a-cut-above-the-rest impression for whatever occasion she chooses to dress.

Twinkle Khanna

With Akshay Kumar’s continuous exposure to the limelight, one gets to see a lot more of wifey Twinkle Khanna as well. And when those appearances are this ultra modish, who are we to complain?
