Most Awaited Movies of 2009

Posted by Kokolicious on 31st December 2008

We’re done with 2008. It’s been a middling year, and here’s a list of big-screen spectacular releases to look forward to next year. Things can only get better.

Chandni Chowk To China

Akshay Kumar strikes again. The Kung Fu Hustle style trailer is the the funniest looking in a long time, and Nikhil Advani’s far too polished a director to let his scripts get completely asinine. Not that it matters, when its a masala film promising the spectacular and Kumar — the man who doesn’t seem capable to planting a mainstream foot wrong — is in the centre of things in Chandni Chowk To China.

3 Idiots

Ace director Rajkumar Hirani finally moves outside of his fabulous Munna and Circuit characters to take on the Indian education system. The director has confirmed that this film is an original script, and not based on Chetan Bhagat’s Five Point Someone (a good piece of news to all of those people who sat through the execrable Hello). Aamir Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Sharman Joshi make for an interesting cast, but we’re all just waiting to see Hirani bat again.

Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra became one of the most respected directors in the industry with his apathy-shattering Rang De Basanti a couple of years ago, and we’ve had to wait three years to see what he does next. This one is a take on a seamy, colourful, mad part of Delhi called Delhi-6, and stars Abhishek Bachchan opposite Sonam Kapoor. We’re expecting texture and metaphor, and the current trailer has our curiosity piqued. Bring it on.

My Name Is Khan

Karan Johar seems to completely have dropped the K, and the subject matter for his next Shah Rukh Khan starrer is intriguing, to say the least: Khan plays a man targetted at an airport because of his last name and his religion, and that discrimination gives rise to many a question. Then again, the film’s been written by Shibani Bhatija, who wrote Fanaa and Kidnap, so maybe we shouldn’t go in expecting answers.

Vishal Bhardwaj leaves Shakespeare out of the mix this time with this magnificently named project, starring Shahid Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra. Remember, this is the man who showed us just how capable Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor were, so it’s wise to prepare for fireworks. The film’s story is still closely guarded, but all we know is that Taare Zameen Par writer Amole Gupte plays the villain in the film. Whatever, man. We’re sold on Bhardwaj and that fantastic title.

Kambakkht Ishq

Akshay Kumar and Kareena Kapoor star in this massive budget film about an Indian stuntman who becomes a sensation across Hollywood. Kambakkht Ishq has several prominent Hollywood players, including Sylvester Stallone, Carmen Electra, Bondgirl Denise Richards and Superman star Brandon Routh. It’s quite a coup by Bollywood standards, and one hopes for an entertaining evening of big-screen proportions.

Imtiaz Ali’s next film

After making Socha Na Tha and Jab We Met on a decidedly comedic note, director Imtiaz Ali has chosen to tread the relatively unpopulated romantic-drama waters for his next film, one starring Saif Ali Khan and Deepika Padukone. The film is currently jetting around the world and shooting everywhere, and we’re just curious to see what Imtiaz does next.

Sujoy Ghosh’s film has been in production for the longest time. Ritesh Deshmukh stars as Alladin while Amitabh Bachchan takes on the role of the genie in this rather zany take on the original. The film is a special effects spectacular and by now, we just want to see what in the world has taken this long to make.

Wake Up Sid

Director Ayaan Mukherji makes his debut with this film that promises to be interesting simply because of its unconventional pairing. Ranbir Kapoor, pinup boy-to-be and current heart-throb of the masses, cast opposite indie queen Konkona Sen Sharma? We’re waiting to see how these two very different genre-representatives get along, and the title sounds fun too.

Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani

Katrina Kaif stars opposite Ranbir Kapoor in this film by Raj Kumar Santoshi. That’s right, the socially aware blockbuster-maker is back with a film that sounds pretty darned unusual. The casting is a bit of a coup, the kind of casting that leaves these kids out to fend for themselves without being able to fall back on a massive banner or Akshay Kumar, Salman Khan, however, does make an appearance.

Bollywood’s Biggest Flops!

Posted by Upasana Jain on 29th December 2008

The year has not been too kind for the Hindi film industry, and there have been many duds at the box office. As the year comes to an end, we asked trade analyst Vinod Mirani to tell us what worked and what didn’t. He makes a list, we try to explain why.

A lot of expected out of Kidnap. It was directed by Sanjay Gadhvi, who made the blockbuster Dhoom series. It starred Imran Khan, the latest star on the block, fresh from his debut hit film Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na. The other star was Sanjay Dutt, with a fan base already in place. But the film simply could not take advantage for all that what was going for it. Imran didn’t play kidnapper properly, Minisha Lamba looked ridiculous as the fashionable victim, her mother Vidya Malvade looked even more ridiculous with her spilling-over cleavage, and Dutt looked just plain bored.

Himesh Reshammiya could not carry forward his Aap Kaa Surroor success in his second acting film, Karzzzz. The story had already been a success — Subhash Ghai had directed the blockbuster Karz, starring Rishi Kapoor, Tina Munim and Simi Garewal, way back in 1980.Himesh doled out great music but not a good performance. His leading ladies Urmila Matondkar and Shweta Kumar fared even worse.

Rani Mukerji’s flop run with Yash Raj Films continued with this film. She could not recreate her Bunty Aur Babli success with her Ta Ra Rum Pum hero Saif Ali Khan.Directed by Kunal Kohli, Thoda Pyar was a fairy tale, without any magic. Amisha Patel seemed to be the film’s only highlight.

After the success of Shootout At Lokhandwala, Vivek Oberoi was looking for another hit with his Shootout director Apoorva Lakhia in Mission Istanbul. But the film was a washout from day one.Mission had all the masala elements of a commercial hit — action, villains and romance — but nothing could save it.

Heroes featured some of the biggest stars of Bollywood like Salman Khan, Sunny Deol, Preity Zinta and Mithun. But the patriotic film lacked soul, and could not attrack audiences to the theatres.

Subhash Ghai tried his luck at cinema again with Yuvvraaj, and came away humbled again. Ghai has had a spate of flops like Yaadein, Kisna and Black And White, with no BO relief.Even Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif, and A R Rahman’s music could not save Yuvvraaj.

Yash Raj Films’ big release Tashan featured Akshay Kumar, the hit-maker of Bollywood. It was also Saif and Kareena Kapoor’s first film together, as an offscreen couple. Yet, this masala potboiler could not rake in the moolah.

Ajay Devgan made his directorial debut with a tearful tale of a wife’s (played by Kajol) ordeal, as she suffers from Alzheimer’s disease. Her husband, played by Devgan himself, goes to hell and back, trying to make their lives better. Loosely inspired by Hollywood film Notebook, U Me Aur Hum did not find as many takers as the Devgans had hoped for.

Quite a lot depended on the fate of Love Story 2050. It would start newcomer Harman Baweja’s career in Bollywood well, his co-star Priyanka Chopra would get the much-awaited hit, and director Harry Baweja would get a hit to his credit. A lot of money was put into the special effects to enhance the final product. But the film — that released on the same day as the hit Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na — bombed.

Priyanka Chopra saw another flop in Drona, co-starring Abhishek Bachchan. Director Goldie Behl’s mythological film was very tacky, with a story that did not appeal to today’s youngsters. People didn’t accept Abhishek as a superhero, and the film bombed.

Best Dressed Bollywood Stars of 2008

Posted by Kokolicious on 29th December 2008

You are what you wear. While some like it classic. Others dig everything ‘in’. But as long as the results look wow, who are we to complain? This year too, many of Bollywood’s charming folk stepped out in the limelight, dressed to kill in sparkling designer attire, which not only complimented their personality but also gave a strong reflection of their taste. Nine times out of 10, others approved too. And so, as the New Year gets ready to greet us, we give you Bollywood’s Ten Best-Dressed Stars of 2008. Read on to know who made it and who missed:

Katrina Kaif

The stars continue to glimmer in Katrina’s favour. Even though Yuvvraaj tank, Singh is Kinng and Race’s success more than made up for it. Courtesy these high-profile releases, one got to see a lot of her and most of these public appearances were quite a treat as she dazzled the shutterbugs in delicate chiffons, elegant gowns, hip dresses or strawberry pink saris.

 Priyanka Chopra

Style had a major part to play in Priyanka Chopra’s two major hits this year. While in Fashion she essayed the role of a supermodel, Dostana had her get into the skin of a Miami-based fashion journalist. The trend bug seems to have bit the girl for good what with her appearing constantly-in-character when it comes to events and dos. Needless to say, we love the new and improved Priyanka Chopra.

Bipasha Basu

Even as we struggle to keep track of Bipasha’s ever-changing haircuts, the Bachna Ae Haseeno babe can pretty much carry off anything on that smoldering hot body. But we really, really dig her chic ‘n’ cool version of the LBD.

Deepika Padukone

Retro, sporty, glamorous, ethnic, the gorgeous model-turned-actress is a clothes horse in the truest sense of the word. Besides dressing up in a lot of Manish Malhotras and Shantanu-Nikhils, Deepika made quite a few jaws drop in an ethereal blue creation by Marc Jacobs. In fact, you might have caught her in the same outfit romancing Venice in the Bachna Ae Haseeno love ditty, Khuda jaane co-starring boyfriend Ranbir Kapoor.

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan

Whether the backdrop is royalty or corporate, Ash loves to surprise us with a new look each and every time. Ditto for the red carpet. Be it solo or cosy hand-in-hand appearances with hubby Abhishek, Mrs Bachchan looked simply sensational in her sequinned saris, crispy formals or hot-as-hell Cannes numbers.

Dia Mirza

You’ll be forgiven for not having any recollection of her last release but when it comes to fashion, Dia Mirza is totally ‘with it’. Her sophisticated turn at premieres and parties goes on to prove just that. Look how she’s upped the ante of a minimalistic black dress with a smart mix of accessories.

Preity Zinta

Preity Zinta  defines fashion as comfort. To her credit, the impeccably turned out star looks as much home in a Kings XI jersey and jeans as she does in this prim ‘n’ propah outfit befitting a Derby event, complete with a hat and over-sized belt. We think she rocks in both the avatars. What about you?

Akshay Kumar

Akshay Kumar can carry off any trend with flying colours. Quite literally. Give him pink, purple or orange, he’ll rock them all. A genuine adventurer when it comes to style, the man looks impossibly good in anything he chooses to wear. Currently, India’s Sexiest Man Alive is big on sleeveless vests, both plain and patterned.

Shah Rukh Khan

Surinder Sahni? Boring. Raj? Jarring! The man behind it all, however, strikes a fine note of traditional and class when it comes to his off-screen appearances. Whether he steps out of (his mansion) Mannat in a simple black and white kurta-pajama to greet his well-wishers on Eid or goes all out to promote his only release this year in a spiffy jacket and jeans, Shahrukh Khan is dressed up for the occasion.

John Abraham

While his fans are still drooling over his skimpy yellow number in Dostana, John Abraham continues to make a yummy statement even in an ordinary shirt and regular pair of jeans.

Topless Salman

Posted by Kokolicious on 29th December 2008

While Shahrukh and Aamir Khan woke up to the concept of body-sculpting only in the forties, Salman Khan has been noted for his bulging physique since forever. Here is a list of some his prominent shirtless appearances on screen over the years. Take a look.

Maine Pyar Kiya

One saw a lot of this poster and Salman during the late 1980s when Sooraj Barjatya’s roaring blockbuster hit the screens. Rather scrawny compared to his current-day beefy avatar, don’t you think?

Salman played a warrior married to Amrita Singh, sporting a Hulk Hogan-inspired hairstyle in this reincarnation drama. It flopped miserably at the box office.

After a spate of flops, Salman decided to pull his socks up and work hard on his body and image. Its sparkling effects were more than visible in his action-packed flicks like Karan Arjun and Veergati giving the stunner another excuse to flaunt his newly-acquired packs and clean-shaven chest.

Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya

A swell-looking Salman in nothing more except torn jeans and a guitar slung around his neck jiving skilfully to the beats of O Oh Jaane Jaana, in brother Sohail Khan’s directorial debut, Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya, made for quite a picture, didn’t it? Before this Salman’s shirtless appearances very few and far between but after Jaana it almost became a trademark.

Dulhan Hum Le Jayenge

The pose reminds us of Maine Pyar Kiya. The story reminded us of Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (to some extent). Lack of originality aside, the Khan looks inarguably dishy. Wait a minute, there’s Karisma Kapur too. We almost didn’t see her.

Har Dil Jo Pyaar Karega

A good body spells great confidence. And so Salman wildly experimented with his style. In other words, no shirts please. Remember his sarong ‘n’ shorts turn in Har Dil Jo Pyaar Karega?

Biwi No 1

As the flirtatious Prem cheating on his gullible wife for a seductive model, a thoroughly drenched Salman Khan lands up on Sushmita Sen’s door for a dry-me-up session. Needless to say, another shirt bites the dust.

Tumko Na Bhool Payenge

Either to show the bad guy what he’s up against or to tempt the heroine into what she’s missing, Salman Khan doesn’t spare any opportunity to showcase those bulging biceps in this desi version of The Long Kiss Goodnight.

Mujhse Shaadi Karogi

Rivalry can mean a lot many things in the bizarre workings of Bollywood. In Mujhse Shaadi Karogi it means dancing in grass skirts to win the girl’s heart. Being a PRO at the flaunting game helps Sallu’s cause. We all know who gets a Priyanka Chopra.

Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya

If donning earrings wasn’t enough, Salman turns up his trend-o-meter with a pierced ring around his navel for his wet ‘n’ hot pool appearance with girlfriend Katrina Kaif for David Dhawan crazy caper.

Love Guru Salman Khan helps Govinda walk the walk, in a typically hunky style in Partner. While the former is swaggering as usual, Chi Chi is in no mood to show off his bulge. What do you think, Will Smith?

Hello and No Entry

Technically, Salman’s roles in Hello and No Entry weren’t nothing beyond extended cameos. That doesn’t stop him from giving his fans a good glimpse of that famous body in dark or day.

Not many 40 something’s can brag of a body like this. The actor highlights his well-preserved physique in the teasers of the upcoming 300-brand action drama, Veer.
