On Screen Artists of Bollywood

Posted by Kokolicious on 28th July 2009

While many a Bollywood character writes poetry, surprisingly few have weilded a paintbrush. Deepika Padukone plays an artist in Imtiaz Ali’s latest film, Love Aaj Kal, take a look at filmi painters through the ages:

Deepika Padukone — Love Aaj Kal

After playing actress in Om Shanti Om and taxidriver in Bachna Ae Haseeno, Deepika varies it up again as she reportedly plays an artist in Imtiaz Ali’s Love Aaj Kal.

Randeep Hooda — Rang Rasiya

In Ketan Mehta’s biopic of Raja Ravi Varma, Hooda plays the legendary artist known for his controversial, erotic depictions of his muses. The film is about censorship and is thus relevant in the modern day.

Emraan Hashmi — Raaz 2

Based clearly on a character from hit TV series Heroes, Hashmi plays an artist with the ability to draw paintings foreshadowing what will happen in the future.

Prateik Babbar — Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na

Imran Khan and Genelia D’Souza took the bows for this film, but a startling performance came from Smita Patil’s son Prateik in a small role as Genelia’s brother, a gifted, reclusive artist.

Aamir Khan — Taare Zameen Par

Aamir Khan plays Ram Kumar Nikumbh, a sensitive and highly empathetic art teacher in a boarding school. It is he who learns of Darsheel Safary’s character Ishaan’s dyslexia, and helps him overcome it.

Rani Mukerji — Baabul

The main romance in Baabul starts with Amitabh Bachchan hitting a golf ball into Rani’s painting and her complaining to Salman Khan without realising that he’s Amitabh’s son. She’s an artist, complete with smocks and a palette.

Akshaye Khanna — Dil Chahta Hai

Khanna played the reclusive artist in Farhan Akhtar’s seminal DCH, and picked out the old but ever-sexy Dimple Kapadia as his muse. The scenes of him painting, and even adjusting the colours, are very memorable indeed.

Dimple Kapadia — Ram Lakhan

There wasn’t that much Dimple Kapadia had to do in Ram Lakhan while Jackie Shroff and Anil Kapoor ruled the roost, but as Jackie’s main squeeze she was an artist and her room was littered with canvases in various stages of progress when we first met her.

Amol Palekar — Baaton Baaton Mein

The scene is of a Mumbai local train and Palekar plays a cartoonist smitten with Tina Munim, a regular on the same train. She notices him sketching her, asks to see it, and a warm Catholic romance is soon in the air.

Rajesh Khanna — Safar

Khanna plays a brooding, moody artist in Asit Sen’s Safar, both painter and poet in equal measures. Like in Anand here too he knows he is dying, a fact that fuels his art and his temper.

Bollywood Heads towards Foreign Locations

Posted by Kokolicious on 17th July 2009

How Bollywood’s passport is growing. It all started with Yash Raj Films back in the 1970s, as they started shooting songs and sequences in Switzerland. Dev Anand went on to set a bunch of films in Nepal, but all these places seem passe nowadays. Here’s a brief look at where the modern filmmakers are setting their films:

Luck – Namibia

Soham Shah’s upcoming Luck is apparently half a remake of 13 Tzameti, but the makers have spared no expense to take the multistarrer unit to lovely Namibia for the shoot.

Dostana – Miami

Karan Johar is a pretty showy producer, and he set up this glossy faux-gay film, Dostana in Miami, Florida and the city — with its skateboards, bikinis and sun — was as much a part of the film as Abhishek Bachchan and John Abraham.

Dhoom 2 – Rio De Janeiro

Sanjay Gadhvi’s Dhoom 2 begins in India but the action soon shifts to the beaches of Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. A pretty worthwhile location, if only to see Bipasha Basu fill out a bikini really, really well.

Bachna Ae Haseeno – Greece

Bipasha looks good amid foreign settings, and Siddharth Anand’s film took her as a supermodel to lovely, lovely Greece. Ranbir Kapoor must have been only too glad to chase this one down.

Kites – Brazil, Mexico

Anurag Basu’s upcoming Kites, starring Hrithik Roshan, Kangna Ranaut and Barbara Mori is set in Brazil and Mexico, and Basu promises a very unconventional film. Let’s wait and watch.

New York – Philadelphia

Sure, Kabir Khan’s film had slices of New York, from the iconic Brooklyn Bridge to a busride down Broadway, but the lion’s share of the film New York ended up being shot in Philadelphia.

Chandni Chowk To China – China

Warner Brothers’ first Hindi production might have been an abysmal failure, but they did indeed take Akshay Kumar and let him practice kicking on top of the Great Wall of China.

Kambakkht Ishq – Los Angeles

The year’s latest hit kicks off with a track called Welcome To Hollywood, and the city of LA takes precedence as Akshay Kumar and Kareena Kapoor traipse around the landscape

Aks – Prague

Rakeysh Mehra’s debut film had a lot happening in Mumbai. But things kick off with a very slick sequence set in Prague, where Amol Palekar is assassinated. It’s a lovely city and the shots capture its grandeur well, even if fleetingly.

Kabhi Alvidaa Na Kehna – New York

Karan Johar’s infidelity saga is the glossiest New York promotion video we’ve made thus far, and while the four characters discovered each other’s spouses, we saw much of Manhattan — not to mention Shah Rukh Khan spreading his arms in that now mandatory pose atop the Brooklyn Bridge.

Pictures of Sania Mirza’s Engagement

Posted by Kokolicious on 11th July 2009

Away from the prying media eyes Indian tennis diva Sania Mirza today got engaged to childhood friend Sohrab Mirza at a plush city hotel. A glittery ceremony at Hotel Taj Krishna here was attended by a few special and close invitees, close to 300, including Indian tennis ace Mahesh Bhupathi, south movie star Chiranjeevi and some political personalities.

The 23-year-old Sohrab will pursue MBA in Britain and his father owns a chain of bakeries in the city. His family migrated from Iran many years ago and lives in Anand Nagar in the heart of the city.

Much to the disappointment of curious and byte crazy media army, posted outside the venue, not even a single peep into the ceremony was allowed by the Mirza family, which termed it a ‘family oriented’  event. Anxiously waiting shutterbugs were also a dejected lot as they were not allowed to click photographs and were promised distribution of photographs through special arrangements.

Delhi based designers Nikhil and Shantanu had prepared Sania’s green and gold lehnga, a traditional dress, which the tennis sensation wore with old family jewellery. The engagement of the Indian tennis  poster girl also put to rest all the speculation about her romantic links with sport stars and bollywood actors
