Why did we lose the Miss World title again?

Posted by Kokolicious on December 24th, 2009

 The golden decade

The last decade has to be the golden decade for India at the international beauty contests, winning seven titles in total. But it is sad to see that we have not been winning any more titles. The winning spree started grandly in ’94 with Aishwarya Rai as Miss World and Sushmita Sen as Miss Universe. A grand entry indeed! Then we had Diana Hayden, Yukta Mookhey and Priyanka Chopra as Miss Worlds of ’97,’99 and ’00 respectively. The year 2000 is very special because we won all the three contests, a feat achieved only once before by Australia in ’72. While Priyanka Chopra won the Miss World title, Lara Dutta and Diya Mirza won the Miss Universe and Miss Asia-Pacific respectively. What started in ’66 with Reita Faria winning the Miss World title that year summed up nicely by completely dominating the scene in ’00. But now it seems more like it was a befitting farewell. We have not won any major award ever since.

Why did we actually lose?

The last decade raised the expectations of the people. It is not like the Olympics that winning a medal makes a person an icon but beauty contests was the turf where we ruled the roost. It seemed like Indian women were the most beautiful. But everything came to an abrupt end which brings us to the question, why? There are many conspiracy theories doing rounds regarding this topic. One rumour is that it was a conspiracy by the cosmetic giants to target the Indian market. India was a growing economy and the cosmetic companies lobbied at the contest and then made the winner their brand ambassador. This theory sounds probable but there is another theory too, quite contradictory to the earlier one. Now, India is a key player in the world scenario and winning at such contests would only boost up the confidence and the morale of the people. The contest itself is a symbol of empowering of women. So, is it a deliberate lobbying to curb the feel-good factor of the Indians? Whether the theories are true or false, the people certainly have a sense of nostalgia of the good old days when we used to often bring home the crown.

Our performance this time

Inspite of all that has been said, we did not do that bad at the last contest. Miss India-World Pooja Chopra, though could not come home with the crown, did not come empty handed either. She won the ‘Beauty With a Purpose’ award. Unfortunately for her and the people back home, she broke her ankle on the brink of the grand finale. She was advised by the doctors and many others to pull out voluntarily from the contest. But she did not, as she was representing more than a billion people and participated with a cast on her leg! She might as well have won an award for her spirit too.

The expectations were higher than usual because the last time we won this title was exactly ten tears ago, it was 18 years old Priyanka Chopra in’00. Coincidentally, she was one of the judges at the contest held at Johannesberg, South Africa. And this girl from Pune had it in her to win the title. She had already done commercials for Mr. Muscle, Big 97 fm, Dabur Honey, Coke(Pakistan) and Ezone. She also walked the ramp for Gitanjali, D’damas, Manish Malhotra, Vikram Phadnis, Wendel Rodricks, Meheka Mirpuri and Roberto Cavalli. She had also acted in the movie Fashion. Maybe, it was just luck that she was lacking in, rest she seems to have it all.

The scenario might be a little disheartening, but let us not get too pessimistic. At least let us admire the beauty who could not win the crown, but definitely won the heart of millions.
