Who could have thought that this movie was going to come out victorious in the Diwali season? After all, the most expensive Bollywood movie Blue was released at the same time. Another movie released at the same time was Main Aurr Mrs. Khanna. But with a mere investment of less than 30 crores, it made a neat sum of 50 crores at the box office. It did not have a good opening but when the big ones disappointed the audience, they naturally turned to this one. After all, people need something to enjoy the festive season. |

Another movie with the Mumbai-Bombay debate but with a Vishal Bhardwaj touch. Though we know him more for doing classic remakes of Shakespeare, this movie took him and Shahid Kapoor to a very different level. People thought that the investment of 35 crores for this crime thriller was a gamble. But the movie did an unprecedented business of almost 68 crores in India alone. |
Anurag Kashyap proved it to us that the theme of Devdas is eternal. Though a large section of the old school did not quite appreciate the treatment, the present generation and the critics just loved it. Perhaps, this was the most critically acclaimed movie of the year 2009. One more interesting thing about the movie is its budget, which was much lower than even the fees of many actors. It was just 6 crores. And the business? 24 crores! Now that’s what I call profit! |
This year we saw two big production houses of Karan Johar and Aditya Chopra making movies on terrorism. Kurbaan of Karan Johar failed, whereas Aditya Chopra laughed his way to the bank. All thanks to New York! But why did this happen? Kurbaan was too serious and mundane, it just scared the audience away. But New York was a romantic movie with terrorism as the backdrop. Due credit should go to the promotion also.

Finally, a nice sweet success under Rajkumar Santoshi‘s belt. It’s been long overdue. People just love the cute pair of Ranbir-Katrina. They looked too good on-screen. Both of them worked hard for this movie. Ranbir is rumoured to have worked on the on-screen chemistry with Katrina at the expense of his off-screen lady love Deepika. Katrina, on the other hand brought out her on-screen image to her off-screen life, specially on the promos. It’s a story of hard work paying off well. |
This was the first hit of the year. It was also the first venture of Saif as a producer. Critics liked that aspect of him whereas the audience liked his role as a simple Sardar. Director Imtiaz Ali of Jab We Met fame also did a neat job. The budget was almost a risk, it was 48 crores. But it was no longer a concern when the return was 75 crores. Money well spent! |
Now Prabhu Deva can teach the master of remakes Priyadarshan how to do it, and not to mention a few dance steps. Jokes apart, Prabhu Deva struck gold with his directorial debut. Not only that, it did good to success starved Salman Khan. There was a nice blend of innocent love and crime. Simplicity can still spell success and this movie is a witness to that. 35 crores is a substantial investment, but the movie collected 38 crores in the opening week itself. What more do you want? |
This movie comes as a redemption for Big B for doing a movie like Aladin. He is a hard worker inspite of his age, that we all know. But here , he gave his heart and soul, literally. Once the make-up was done, it was impossible to move freely for almost eight hours. And, the make up was done by the same artist who did it for Robin Williams in Mrs. Doubtfire. Everyone gave amazing performance but the real performer was the heart wrenching tale of Auro, a child suffering from a terminal disease known as Progeria played by Big B. Besides, all due credit should also go to R.Balki for coming up with a genius of a concept like this. |
