Shahid And Kareena Converse At SRK Party

Posted by Kokolicious on 23rd February 2010

First time after the broke up, of ex-lovers Shahid and Kareena finally had a talk in at Shah Rukhs party, The venue for this patch up was Shah Rukh Khans bungalow, Mannat, where King Khan had hosted a celebration for My Name Is Khan.

Shahid and Kareena came face to face and everyone thought they would simply ignore each other like they have on so many occasions in the past. But this time, Karan happened to be present right there and instead of marching past each other, they slowed down for a bit. And the rest, as they say, is history

Even after the ice was broken, neither Shahid nor Kareena seemed in a rush to get back to more comfortable company. They had a pretty warm exchange and a little later even Saif, who was present at the party, joined them.

Shahid and Kareena have finally decided to leave their acrimonious past behind them. This was very evident in the manner all three of them – Shahid, Kareena and Saif – interacted with each other at Shah Khan’s party.

Which camp will define Bollywood comedy?

Posted by Kokolicious on 25th December 2009

When we look at the genre of comedy in Bollywood, we see that it is dominated by camps and each camp produces its signature movies. Let us have a look at these camps and see who is most likely to represent or define Bollywood comedy.

The Old Moghul
David Dhawan is an institution by himself. He is one of the oldest among the surviving camps. He has managed to tickle our funny bones over the years. He has been considered by many among the most successful directors and that is quite a complement as it is not easy for comedy directors to achieve that fame. His favourite actors are Govinda, Salman Khan and Sanjay Dutt as the male protagonists and Raveena Tandon and Karishma Kapoor as the female lead.
The thing which he lacks is critical acclaim. Some of his movies have done extremely well commercially but some feel that they lack depth. There was a profusion of his movies in the nineties, so, at least people got to know him from that. His biggest blockbuster so far is Aankhein starring Govinda and Chunky Pandey. His recent movie Partner did good business too. But, he is just a successful director, not an acclaimed one.

The Remaker
Priyadarshan comes next to Mani Ratnam in being known both in south and Bollywood. He is someone who has managed to earn a name for himself by doing remakes of Malayalam, Tamil or Telugu originals. Technically, he has made hardly any original movie in Hindi. But that did not stop him from making a name in Bollywood. He understands humour as universal and it is not confined to any particular language. Confusion and pandemonium are essential for his brand of humour. His favourite actors are Akshay Kumar, Suniel Shetty, Paresh Rawal, Akshay Khanna and Asrani.
The problem with David Dhawan is that one tends to get tired of him beyond a point. But with Priyadarshan, we do not have that. How can we forget his masterpiece Hera Pheri where we laughed till our stomachs hurt? He is a delight always. He has more variety too. Along with Hera Pheri, Maalamaal Weekly got him acclaim. It is not to say that he has no other hits as we have Bhool Bhulaiya, Hungama, Hulchul and some others. Just when we are about to say that his camp will define Bollywood comedy, then one thing comes up into mind that he has not been original in Hindi. So, we expect him to come up with Hindi originals, like he does in Malyalam or Tamil.

Conventional but Classic
Rajkumar Hirani and Vidhu Vinod Chopra are an unlikely pair but they struck gold in their first strike.Though they have only two movies under their belt, they have been able to establish themselves as an important camp in Bollywood. Otherwise too, Vidhu Vinod Chopra is a renowned director. But when this two get together, it is a definite laugh riot. The only two movies they have made so far, Munnabhai MBBS and Lagey Raho Munnabhai are masterpieces. It might be their masterpieces, but for Bollywood, they are classics, like Golmaal and Padosan of yesteryears. It even gave a new dimension to Sanjay Dutt.
If we talk about success percentage, then no one beats them. The third of the Munnabhai series, Munnabhai Chale America is highly anticipated. Critical acclaim is not what they lack, they got plenty of it. Their characters are not just comic characters, but they are characters and have individual personalities. His movies always have a strong social message. With Lagey Raho Munnabhai, we saw the revival of Gandhiism. Whatever their pros are, the biggest one is that people just love them. Quite likely to represent Bollywood comedy, but a little too early to predict.

The New Face of Comedy
This camp of Rajat Kapoor, Vinay Pathak and Ranveer Shorey and other asociates like Saurabh Shukla nd Neha Dhupia is the most well defined camp in comedy. This camp is the critics favourite. Very low budget and low profile movies but unexpected success, that has become their trademark. There is an intellectual depth to their comedy. Their comedy has been called ‘black comedy’ by many. Others say that it is escapist. But their most formidable aspect is they are changing the concept of conventional comedy.
In most of their movies, unconventional plot is mostly the driving force, like Mithya. They do not dramatise, as in Dasvidaniya, and the narration is a matter-of-fact as in Mixed Doubles. They score more in variety than the Munnabhai camp. So, when we come to the question of defining Bollywood comedy, I feel feel they are the most apt, though the Rajkumar Hirani and Vidhu Vinod Chopra camp gives them a tough competition. What do you say?

Can Ranbir Kapoor be the next Bollywood Superstar?

Posted by Kokolicious on 17th December 2009

Seems like it is Ranbir Kapoor all the way. When he first appeared in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Saawariya, it seemed like we had another chocolate boy in the industry. But it turns out that there is more to this chocolate boy, more than just a grand family name of the Kapoors and the good looks to win over the hearts of millions of girls. His role as a rich spoilt kid in Wake Up Sid (directed by Karan Johar) got critical acclaim whereas the movie was a declared hit. Then came in one of the greatest hits of 2009, Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani. Maybe, time for the old moghuls of the industry to make way for the next superstar.

Family Background

Perhaps, only Abhishek Bachchan can be prouder of better parentage suited for the industry, but when the whole family is taken into consideration , only another Kapoor can be as proud as him. Got Rishi Kapoor, another heartthrob of another time as father, Neetu Singh, another beauty of another time as mother and other known and famous relatives like Ridhima as sister, Randhir and Rajiv Kapoor as uncles, Karishma and Kareena as cousins, Raj Kapoor as grand father and Prithviraj Kapoor as great grandfather. If a family name is all it takes to make it large in the industry, then he has it all.

But it is not that it was just his family name that launched him into the industry. This boy has done it from the scratch. Went to study method acting at the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Industry in New York. Lee Strasberg, remind you, is the famous disciple of the Father of Method Acting, Stanislavsky, and his school includes famous actors of yesteryears like Marlon Brando of the Godfather fame. Then he assisted Sanjay Leela Bhansali as an assistant director for the critically acclaimed movie Black. He made his debut on the silver screen with the same director in Saawariya and got his first award as the best male debutant at the Filmfare awards. Then he came in the romantic comedy Bachna Ae Haseeno alongside Deepika Padukone, Minisha Lamba and Bipasha Basu. The next movie Wake Up Sid was a critical and box-office success. And as already mentioned, Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani is one the biggest hits of 2009.  His recent film, Rocket Singh: Salesman of the Year has been critically acclaimed and seems it is likely to do fairly well at the box-office. Another superstar has come of age! His future projects include Rajniti, directed by Prakash Jha of Gangaajal fame and Siddharth Anand’s Anjaana Anjaani with Priyanka Chopra. The Khans seem to be doing fine, Akshay Kumar and Abhay Deol are doing well in their respective genres. If we say the scene is too crowded, he can pretty well carve out, better make his own space.

Bollywood is known for its cut-throat competition and it is not that he is already a superstar. The closest competition seems to be with Shahid Kapoor. Shahid also has both critical acclaim and commercial success under his belt, but if we consider the rate at which both climbed to stardom, then I think Ranbir outweighs Shahid. Another competition he might have to face is from Abhay Deol, but Abhay does not seem to be eyeing the spot. He is more of a critics’ favourite than a saleable face. It would not be fair to compare him with the established ones like Abhishek Bachchan, or Saif Ali Khan. Moreover, we are quite used to their presence. So, what we have here is a young face, fairly new to the industry but got what it takes to be the next superstar. Maybe it will take some time to reach the top, but if he keeps his performance consistent, he will definitely be the next superstar. What do you think?

Rakhi Sawant finally selects life partner

Posted by Kokolicious on 3rd August 2009

India’s first televised ‘swayamvar’ concluded with Rakhi Sawant choosing Toronto-based Elesh Parujanwala as her life partner in a unique reality TV show. Rakhi made the final choice from the three finalists – from the original list of 16 contestants. The other two finalists were Manas Katyal and businessman Chhitiz Jain, both from New Delhi. In the dramatic finale, she garlanded Elesh – as the audience clapped on. Only time will tell whether she will ever marry as it still seems to be a publicity stunt.

Romance was high in the air as Rakhi and Parujanwala said ‘I Love You’ to each other while exchanging rings and vows during the glittering ceremony attended by the boy’s family members and celebrities from the TV world. Underlining that she needed more time to know him better, heavily bejeweled Rakhi said, "Today, we are getting engaged because both of us need some time together before we get married." Giving reasons why she selected Parujanwala, Rakhi said "He is honest."

Rakhi Sawant’s sangeet and mehendi functions saw some of her friends from the television fraternity making it a memorable day for her. Juhi Parmar and Sachin Shroff, Gaurav and Mouni Roy, Anoop Soni and Smita Bansal were seen performing at her sangeet while Rakhi’s dance guru Saroj Khan choreographed the performances.

The artists were seen performing on popular Hindi shaadi songs like Mehendi Laga ke Rakhna, Genda Phool, Sajna Ji Wari Wari and the likes to set the mood of celebration. To add more glitz to the show, the three finalists Manas, Chiitiz and Elesh also geared up to groove and match their moves with their gorgeous bride-to-be. Even the families and friends of the grooms flew down from their respective cities and countries to join the excitement.

So, is she getting hitched today? "Let me clarify, I’m not getting married, now. I’m selecting someone from the show to be my life partner. It’s more of an engagement. So far, I’ve dated the contestants on camera. Now, I’ll date the man I select off camera. I need to know the person well and I can’t gamble with my life for the sake of entertainment. There will be no saat pheres, maang mein sindoor or wearing a mangalsutra just yet. If after knowing the person well, I feel that he’s my Prince Charming, I"ll tie the knot" she remarks.
