How Bollywood’s passport is growing. It all started with Yash Raj Films back in the 1970s, as they started shooting songs and sequences in Switzerland. Dev Anand went on to set a bunch of films in Nepal, but all these places seem passe nowadays. Here’s a brief look at where the modern filmmakers are setting their films:

Luck – Namibia

Soham Shah’s upcoming Luck is apparently half a remake of 13 Tzameti, but the makers have spared no expense to take the multistarrer unit to lovely Namibia for the shoot.

Dostana – Miami

Karan Johar is a pretty showy producer, and he set up this glossy faux-gay film, Dostana in Miami, Florida and the city — with its skateboards, bikinis and sun — was as much a part of the film as Abhishek Bachchan and John Abraham.

Dhoom 2 – Rio De Janeiro

Sanjay Gadhvi’s Dhoom 2 begins in India but the action soon shifts to the beaches of Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. A pretty worthwhile location, if only to see Bipasha Basu fill out a bikini really, really well.

Bachna Ae Haseeno – Greece

Bipasha looks good amid foreign settings, and Siddharth Anand’s film took her as a supermodel to lovely, lovely Greece. Ranbir Kapoor must have been only too glad to chase this one down.

Kites – Brazil, Mexico

Anurag Basu’s upcoming Kites, starring Hrithik Roshan, Kangna Ranaut and Barbara Mori is set in Brazil and Mexico, and Basu promises a very unconventional film. Let’s wait and watch.

New York – Philadelphia

Sure, Kabir Khan’s film had slices of New York, from the iconic Brooklyn Bridge to a busride down Broadway, but the lion’s share of the film New York ended up being shot in Philadelphia.

Chandni Chowk To China – China

Warner Brothers’ first Hindi production might have been an abysmal failure, but they did indeed take Akshay Kumar and let him practice kicking on top of the Great Wall of China.

Kambakkht Ishq – Los Angeles

The year’s latest hit kicks off with a track called Welcome To Hollywood, and the city of LA takes precedence as Akshay Kumar and Kareena Kapoor traipse around the landscape

Aks – Prague

Rakeysh Mehra’s debut film had a lot happening in Mumbai. But things kick off with a very slick sequence set in Prague, where Amol Palekar is assassinated. It’s a lovely city and the shots capture its grandeur well, even if fleetingly.

Kabhi Alvidaa Na Kehna – New York

Karan Johar’s infidelity saga is the glossiest New York promotion video we’ve made thus far, and while the four characters discovered each other’s spouses, we saw much of Manhattan — not to mention Shah Rukh Khan spreading his arms in that now mandatory pose atop the Brooklyn Bridge.

Ranbir Kapoor

Ranbir Kapoor has adopted a totally new look in his new film, Rocket Singh: Salesman Of The Year. And at quite an early stage in his career too. Rocket Singh — directed by Shimit Amin (Ab Tak Chappan, Chak De! India) — sees Ranbir dressed up as a Sardar.

Shah Rukh Khan, Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi

The ever romantic hero, Shah Rukh played the simpleton in love with his beloved Taani in Aditya Chopra’s film. He shed his style for a simple Surinder Suri look, complete with well-combed hair, spectacles, high-waist trousers and running shoes. When he did leave his simple Suri look behind, he put on a wild gaudy look, quite unlike the star’s own excellent style.

Aamir Khan, Lagaan

Aamir chose a rustic look for his home production, Lagaan. He played a dhoti-clad villager at a time when no A-lister would go near villager-roles. His Bhuvan won hearts the world over, and even landed an Oscar nomination. After Lagaan, Aamir changed his look in quite a few films like Dil Chahta Hai, Mangal Pandey, Rang De Basanti, Fanaa, Taare Zameen Par and Ghajini. In fact, his constant transformation made Aamir himself say, ‘I have forgotten how I look because I have changed myself so much to suit the characters in my films in the last eight years.’

Saif Ali Khan, Omkara

When Saif decided to play a rustic character, it was way different from Aamir’s Bhuvan. Langda Tyagi was a tobacco-chewing, mean ruffian, who didn’t take very kindly to being sidelined. His villainous turn was very different from the regular ‘dude’ roles we associated Saif with, and one that got him a lot of fans. His experimentation will continue in his next film, Love Aaj Kal, where he plays a sardar.

Akshay Kumar, Jaan-e-man

Akshay played a geeky role in parts of Jaan-e-man, complete with curly hair, huge spectacles and braces. His Agastya was madly in love with Preity Zinta’s stylish character. It was after he got rid of his nerdy look that he seemed to stand a chance but it was too late anyway.

Hrithik Roshan, Koi… Mil Gaya

Hrithik Roshan played a mentally challenged man brilliantly in Koi Mil Gaya. A child trapped in a man’s body, Hrithik’s Rohit Mehra brought tears to your eyes. Wearing a school uniform, and getting bullied by the local bullies was a part of Rohit’s life until it changed magically, thanks to Jadoo.

Salman Khan, Suryavanshi

Salman Khan tried to pull off this period film with conviction but it only ended up making him look silly in a white wig. After the film tanked at the box office, Salman stopped experimenting for a while. It was a decade later, in Tere Naam, that Salman got a new hairstyle. This time, however, it became a craze and was copied by all his fans.

Sanjay Dutt, Zinda

Sanjay Dutt has experimented with his hair quite a few times. From his long hair in Saajan to the spiky look in Plan, Sanjay has tried quite a few hairstyles. But it was Zinda, where he looked very different, thanks his unshaven and rugged look. Unfortunately, his look and the film did not get very popular with his fans.

Arjun Rampal, Rock On!!

Arjun put on long hair and a moustache to play the older and wiser Joe Mascarenas in Rock On!! While he carried it off well, his gorgeous supermodel looks looked hotter in the younger rocker version, where he held his own against the brilliant Farhan Akhtar.
